Lynch, Jackson Released; Practice Squad; Waivers

August 31, 2008

Bill Belichick hasn’t stopped making headlines.  Today, the team announced the release of receiver Chad Jackson and strong safety John Lynch, bringing the team to 51 players.

With Chad Jackson, I was shocked, to say the least.  I thought he had begun to make strides near the end of the preseason, but apparently it wasn’t enough for Bill Belichick.  Jackson had really struggled fitting in near the beginning of camp, and I guess Belichick had finally had enough.  It will be really disappointing to see him go, and it’ll hurt the team too.  Who is going to be that number four option?  Will it be Washington?  Ventrone?  Slater?  At this point it’s hard to say, although I’m going to start looking at receiver prospects for next years draft.

The feeling I’m getting with John Lynch is that he is going to return following the Kansas City game.  The team likely released him so that his contract would not be guaranteed for the season.  Mike Reiss breaks it down nicely:

“I have no regrets about my time thus far with the Patriots,” said Lynch. “The immense respect that I’ve long held for the organization has been only heightened over the past couple of weeks. I am going to keep all options open and look forward with excitement to see what the future brings.”

The “thus far” part of Lynch’s comment seems to indicate this could be a situation where Lynch is not kept on the Patriots’ roster for the opening week — when salaries for veterans would be guaranteed — before returning to the club after the first game.

Head coach Bill Belichick also included a comment in the team’s release:

“It goes without saying but John is an all-time great safety, one of the league’s classiest professionals and his elite play speaks for itself,” said Belichick. “As has been the case in other situations, I would not rule anything out down the road.”

The Patriots also began filling out their practice squad by signing six players to it.  The players signed include Titus Adams, Mark Dillard, Antwain Spann, Mike Richardson, BenJarvus Green-Ellis… and Vince Redd.

Normally, I wouldn’t excited about a practice-squad team… but this year, I am.  We get to keep two very promising prospects in BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Vince Redd, as well as four guys with upside Mike Richardson, Antwain Spann, Mark Dillard, and Titus Adams.  All of these guys happened to be in contention for roster spots (although Dillard was a longer shot) and it’s amazing that all of them sneaked through waivers the way they did.

The Patriots also claimed two players off waivers.  They claimed tight end Jason Pociask from the Jets and offensive tackle Mark LeVoir from the Rams.  LeVoir, 26, is a former Notre Dame tackle who has yet to appear in a game.  Pociask was a 2006 5th round pick, and has appeared in four games, making one catch.

The Great Cassel Debate

August 31, 2008

Yesterday, a lot of fans were surprised when they discovered that Matt Cassel had beaten out Matt Gutierrez for 2nd string quarterback spot, behind Tom Brady.  I got a few emails yesterday, some quite angry with Belichick and Pioli:

what the (explicative) is belidiot doing keeping cassel on the team???  i cant stand to watch cassel in four years here he never score one touchdown.  pathetic, and retarted decision by the coach.  we need to sign someone who can throw the ball like chris simms because if brady get hurt we wont even make the palyoffs

My first reaction was wow.  I couldn’t believe I had gotten such a poorly written email….  On a serious note, I got four or five of these yesterday (you know, you could just leave a comment).  Essentially, they all said how Cassel was a sorry excuse for an NFL quarterback.

Now, may I be the first to say that I disagree with the majority of the opinions of the fan base.  If you want to play a numbers game, we can do just that.  So, after a lot of research, I was able to compile Matt Cassel’s career stats, including the preseason:

Year G COMP ATT YDS TD INT
2005ps 4 27 54 256 1 1
2005rs 2 13 24 183 2 1
2006ps 4 49 82 680 3 1
2006rs 6 5 8 32 0 0
2007ps 4 23 40 230 0 2
2007rs 6 4 7 38 0 1
2008ps 4 19 34 165 0 1
TOTAL 30 140 241 1584 6 7

That equals to a quarterback rating of 74.1 with a total completion percentage of 58.5.

Faulk Suspended??

August 30, 2008

I am mystified as to Kevin Faulk being penalized a game for violating the league’s “Substance Abuse Policy”.  He got picked up at a Lil’ Wayne concert carrying two marijuana cigars.  He never failed a NFL drug test but he is penalized a game?  This is ludicrous.  I think the NFL substance abuse policy should regulate actual substance abuse, not an NFL player carrying substances for friends.

Under the American legal system Faulk would be guilty of possession of a banned substance, but there is no reason for the league to punish the possession of illicit drugs like steroids or marijuana, the aim of the substance abuse policy is to keep the game clean.  Kevin Faulk is clean so why is he being suspended?  Roger Goodell is too strict, bordering on some third world dictator mad with power.  If Adam Jones can play at all Kevin Faulk should be able to play the first game of the season.

Wow! Patriots Trim Roster to 53

August 30, 2008

The report from Patriots.com:

The New England Patriots placed two players on the reserve/injured list, placed one player on the reserve/non-football injury list and released 14 players today. Tackle Oliver Ross (shoulder) was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, while linebacker Bo Ruud (ankle) and defensive lineman Kenny Smith (arm) were placed on the reserve/injured list. Additionally, New England released first-year defensive lineman Titus Adams, veteran cornerback Fernando Bryant, rookie tight end Tyson DeVree, rookie safety Mark Dillard, veteran center Mike Flynn, rookie running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, veteran quarterback Matt Gutierrez, veteran linebacker Victor Hobson, rookie linebacker Vince Redd, veteran cornerback Mike Richardson, rookie tackle Stephen Sene, veteran defensive back Antwain Spann, veteran defensive lineman Santonio Thomas and veteran offensive lineman John Welbourn.

Ok… where to start?

The biggest surprise?  Fernando Bryant.  I didn’t think he played terrific football, but he was starter from day one.  Wow.  I can’t even begin to hypothesize why he would be released.  I’m shocked.  Also released at the cornerback position was Mike Richardson, someone I predicted.  That leaves Ellis Hobbs, Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, and Lewis Sanders.  But that can’t be all can it?  So… that means Belichick must have something up his sleeve, right?  And if you’re a real Patriots fan, you know who I’m thinking.  Is a Ty Law deal actually imminent?

There weren’t any other “big” surprises, but a few noteable names.  Matt Gutierrez was released.  My guess is that he gets claimed off waivers, although he would likely return to the practice sqad if not.  A lot of people were probably surprised by this move, but I really wasn’t (see previous post).  Then there was BenJarvus Green-Ellis.  Although his release was expected, it really is a shame because I doubt he clears waivers.  I was really dissapointed that Vince Redd got released as well.  I really liked him a lot, and I was hoping that his strong preseason play would be enough to earn him a roster spot.  Hopefully he can clear waivers.  Mike Flynn and Antwain Spann were two other big names to not make the team.  There was also Victor Hobson, but a lot of people saw this coming (again, see previous post).

Now, I’ll address the other type of surprise, the surprise of those who made the team.  Ray Ventrone was one of them.  I’m very glad he made the team.  The converted receiver really showed some flashes this preseason, and he could potentially see some playing time in the slot with Welker’s undisclosed injury.  Then, C.J. Jones.  I’m not going to lie, I counted him out after the first preseason game.  But he has shown some strong receiving and return ability, and surprisingly, showed enough to earn himself a roster spot.  Then, there was Dan Connolly.  I really didn’t think he stood much of a chance at making the roster… but again, I was wrong.

So, in the end, there were some big surprises of who was cut, and who remained.  Yet, the roster is not finalized.  Could a Willie Anderson, Ty Law, or Junior Seau be making their way to (or back to) Foxborough in the coming days?  We’ll just have to wait to see.

Faulk Suspended One Game

August 30, 2008

Patriots running back Kevin Faulk has been suspended one game two to violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Faulk’s suspension will open up a roster spot for one player on the team.

2008 Patriots Final Roster Predictions: Deadline Day

August 30, 2008

So I made one of these earlier in the year, but here’s my volume 2.  Let’s go:

Quarterbacks: Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Kevin O’Connell

This is where I made my first big change.  Cassel now gets the nod for me.  Maybe Goots was more productive, but lets keep in mind that he was playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers.  Cassel played against the starters of legitimate playoff teams.  Now, he struggled to put points on the board, but, after the first game, played completely mistake free.  Sure, he wasn’t flashy, but, with a good game plan and running game, he could get the job done.  Goots gets traded for a conditional pick (6th or 7th round).

Running Backs: Laurence Maroney, Lamont Jordan, Kevin Faulk (suspended), Heath Evans

All signs are pointing towards the Patriots holding on to five, but for some reason, I don’t see it happening.  Sammy Morris showed nothing special this preseason, so I think the Patriots might show him the door.  Kevin Faulk is too valuable as a receiver and in pass protection.  Hopefully BenJarvus will clear waivers so we can put him on the practice squad.  But if not, the Patriots might consider keeping him.

Receivers: Randy Moss, Jabar Gaffney, Wes Welker, Chad Jackson, Kelley Washington, Matt Slater, Sam Aiken, Ray Ventrone

The Patriots could very well keep Sam Aiken here, and I think everyone wants them to keep Ray Ventrone here, who is an obvious fan favorite.  Unfortunately, Ventrone probably won’t make it.

Back-on: After doing the final roundup, I counted only 51, so Aiken gets the nod here.

Update: With the Faulk situation, I give Ventrone a roster spot, although I still don’t think he’ll make it.

Tight Ends: Ben Watson, David Thomas

I really thought Marcus Pollard was going to make this team, but… obviously… not.  Then, the Patriots cut Jonathan Stupar last night.  So that leaves the question… will Stephen Spach make the roster?  I say not, but I think he will be on speed-dial, just as Marcellus Rivers was last year.  Poor.  Marcellus.  Rivers.

Offensive Line: Matt Light, Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen, Billy Yates, Nick Kazcur, Ross Hochstein, Wesley Britt, John Welbourn

I’m pretty sure these eight will make the squad.  But the question for me is, with the loss of Ryan O’Callaghan, will the Patriots look to keep another tackle?  If they do, John Welbourn would be a likely candidate to make the team, although the Pats could go hunting after final cuts.

Update: According to Mike Flynn’s agent, Flynn will not make the team.  I’m going to give a spot to John Welbourn, but the Patriots might look towards a Todd Wade type of player.

Defensive Line: Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren, Mike Wright, Le Kevin Smith, Jarvis Green

With no true backup nose tackle, this group looks a little shaky.  However, Smith, Green, Wright, and Seymour have all played inside before, so this group could work out okay.  Titus Adams is one candidate that could be in the mix for this roster spot.  Nevertheless, this is the best group of defensive lineman in the entire NFL.  Period.

Linebackers: Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi, Jerod Mayo, Adalius Thomas, Shawn Crable, Pierre Woods, Vince Redd, Gary Guyton, Eric Alexander, Larry Izzo

The tough cut here is Victor Hobson, a guy who I thought was really going to make a difference this year.  However, based on his status on the depth chart, I doubt he makes the team.  Unfortunate, but true.  The rookie free agents, Gary Guyton and Vince Redd, have both been great, and have shown too much promise to be released (and they would not clear waivers).  Although I’m not a believer, there has been some speculation going around the net that Tedy Bruschi could be at risk of being cut.  I thought I’d throw it out there, because its been talked about, but I sincerely doubt it.

Cornerbacks: Fernando Bryant, Ellis Hobbs, Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, Lewis Sanders

This group is just yearning for Ty Law…. “we need physical, shutdown cornerback… please.”  However, with the current personnel, this looks like the best group to me.  The first three are locks.  Wilhite will almost definitely make the team.  But the real battle comes between Lewis Sanders and Mike Richardson, the two most physical corners on the Patriots roster.  Both could make it, but I give Sanders the nod due to his good health and strong preseason play.  Antwain Spann is also a tough cut, although I think he could have a serious shot at making the team.  His play this preseason has been admireable.

Back-on: After doing the final count, I only had 51, so I make a surprise pick, by giving the unheralded Antwain Spann the pick here.

Safeties: Rodney Harrison, James Sanders, John Lynch, Brandon Meriweather, Antwain Spann

Could this group be the best group of four in the NFL?  Time will tell, but on paper, this group is intimidating.  All four are virtual roster locks.  Spann is officially listed as a corner, but he plays primarily safety, so I’m putting him here.  Matt Slater can also play safety.

Specialists: Stephen Gostkowski, Chris Hanson, Lonnie Paxton

No competition for any of these guys.

By the way, on a scary note, I put together this roster without looking at anything, not even a roster.

Patriots Release Four Players

August 29, 2008

The Patriots have begun final cuts by releasing four players, Boston Globe writer Mike Reiss reports:

The New England Patriots announced the released of four players today:second-year nose tackle Steve Fifita, first-year offensive lineman Jimmy Martin, fourth-year cornerback Jeff Shoate and rookie tight end Jonathan Stupar.

The release of these four players brings the Patriots down to 71 players on their roster.  They need to be down to 53 by 4:00 PM tomorrow.

I’m a little dissapointed by the releases of Jonathan Stupar and Steve Fifita, two guys who I liked and who I thought could be viable backups for the team.

Stupar is a long, athletic tight end, who can make catches and traffic, and has a frame he can build upon.  He made a few catches in the preseason, but with the early release, it does not look like they are considering him for a practice sqad spot.  Fifita is a short, but thick player.  He makes an ideal fit at nose tackle.  With a good initial burst and strength, plus some solid preseason play, I thought he had a chance at the final roster, but I guess not.

Patriots Down to 75

August 26, 2008

With the first roster cut at 4:00 PM this afternoon, the Patriots trimmed their roster down to the league mandated 75 player limit.  To make the cut, the Patriots released FB/HB Kyle Eckel, cornerback Jason Webster, and rookie interior lineman Ryan Wendell.  The team also placed right tackle Ryan O’Callaghan on injured reserve, effectively ending his season.  Lastly, the team placed right guard Stephen Neal on the PUP list (the reserve one).

The release of Kyle Eckel wasn’t too surprising.  As I’ve said, although unfortunate, his feel good story had to end at some point.  With a fully stacked backfield, it was too hard for him to grasp a roster spot.  So Belichick gave him an extra few days to be able to sign on with a team, rather than cutting him at final cuts.  Jason Webster was the same kind of thing.  Fresh off of a return from injury, the team chose to let Webster go rather than releases him during the final trim-downs.  Webster’s release increases the chances that rookie Jonathan Wilhite not only makes the team, but sees time on the field.  Ryan Wendell was a rookie center/guard who I liked as a rookie free agent pickup, but being a longer shot, didn’t have enough to make the team.

Then two injury moves will be the hardest to bear.  Ryan O’Callaghan was the perfect back-up/fringe starter guy we needed for depth at the tackle spot.  It’s really unfortunate that he won’t be able to suit up this year.  The Stephen Neal move will also hurt.  Neal hasn’t practiced all training camp due to a knee injury suffered in the Super Bowl.  Still, the Patriots line has looked really shaky without him in the right guard spot.  Billy Yates will likely start in Neal’s spot for the time being, but the Patriots really have to hope that they get him back soon.

Frustrating

August 25, 2008

Much of the Patriots preseason has been frustrating, to say the least.

0-3, with two truly pathetic efforts.  There have been some notable individual performances, but none too significant.

So should we be worried, or is everything okay?

Lets start with the good.  Patriots rookie linebacker Jerod Mayo has 18 total tackles in the three preseason games.  He has clearly won a spot as starting linebacker, and has looked terrific at times.  Look agile, strong, and has played with great intensity.  Along the same lines, Patriots rookie outside linebacker Shawn Crable, has also looked great at times.  He’s made a couple of sacks, and looks like a great edge linebacker who was the fluidity to be solid in coverage and the strength and poise to be efficient in run coverage.

Fellow Patriots rookie, quarterback Kevin O’Connell, has had his share of ups and downs.  His two interceptions don’t look great (however, keep in mind that only one of them was his fault).  However, he has shown potential looking accurate, mobile, and he’s shown the ability to throw the ball long.  He has a very unique and intriguing skillset, and he will be interesting to watch in the coming years.

While there are many more good things to talk about, theres a lot more bad things.

Lets start with special teams.  We haven’t gotten any big return.  We’ve had two turnovers and have let up two touchdowns.  The only bright spot has been the play of Matt Slater, who has really opened some eyes for his return game and his return coverage game.  Overall, these mistakes have to be brought down.

Defense.  Although there have been some strong individual performance, the defense as a whole hasn’t looked good.  Too many mental lapses leading to big plays.  The in-cuts and slants have been consistently killing us as offenses get consistent 10-20 yard gains.  This area is a real need of improvement.

The offensive line is a total mess.  There have been too many injuries to count, and the Patriots keep signing guys to try and fill the major voids… and it isn’t working.  Most of Cassel’s “struggles” can be blamed on the so called “starting” offensive line.  Could we be re-entering the Drew Bledsoe glory days?

Although it is in a big part to the offensive line, the total offensive production has been a drag.  Lamont Jordan was productive in the first game, but hasn’t played since.  Laurence Maroney and Sammy Morris have been relatively innefective.  BenJarvus Green-Ellis has shown some flashes, but has had really limited chances.  Kevin Faulk has been a relative non-factor.  Matt Cassel hasn’t made many big mistakes, but hasn’t been able to get the offense moving well.  Chad Jackson has struggled (but boy did he make a beautiful catch against the Eagles).

Then there’s the Tom Brady “injury.”  At first I didn’t take it seriously, but now I am.  He needs to get on the field.  I am of the belief that Brady needs some game experience to be ready for the season.  We’ll see if he plays against the Giants, but either way, he needs to get himself on the field.  Superstar or rookie, every player needs to have some game experience, so that rust can come off before the season starts.

Now… the list of issues I just presented could seem like a really bad thing.  But lets keep this in mind: this is a preseason game and we are more likely to see Belichick tell us about how his weekend went than see him come up with an actual gameplan.  Still, I’d really like to see a win, and if I could pick a game I’d like to see the Patriots win in the preseason, it would be the Giants.

Patriots Sign Mike Flynn

August 22, 2008

The Patriots have signed free agent guard/center Mike Flynn, according to reports.

The signing of Flynn is a result of the numerous number of injuries to the interior of the Patriots line.  Ross Hochstein and Billy Yates, two top back-up interior lineman, have also both suffered injuries.

Flynn has started 115 of 134 games in ten seasons, all of which were with the Baltimore Ravens.  So, Flynn could come in and start if needed.

But I’m not going to lie, I thought Anthony Clement could surprise some people, and I thought James “Big Cat” Williams would be a stud.  With that in mind, lets just hope Flynn has come ready to play.
