Brady at Practice on Monday

January 29, 2008

For the first time since before the AFC Championship, Tom Brady took part in a full team practice.  At Monday afternoon’s practice, Brady took part in all team drills, including jogging.  Brady did however, have his ankle taped, and he did have a noticeable limp.

Tom Brady will play in the game.  The media is covering this thing too much.  However, the severity of the injury shouldn’t be downplayed as it will nag Brady during the Super Bowl, as high ankle sprains take a few weeks to fully recover from.  That being said, I recall that Brady once had his ankle injured before the Super Bowl.  I wonder how it panned out that time…

Those Patriots vs. Our Patriots: 1985 Patriots

January 28, 2008

As the Patriots get ready to take the field for their sixth Super Bowl in just over 20 years, I thought I would take a look back at some of those former Super Bowl teams.

1985 Patriots

Record: 11-5

Playoff Results:

Wildcard: Patriots 26, Jets 14

Divisional: Patriots 27, Raiders 20

AFC Championship: Patriots 31, Dolphins 14

Superbowl: Patriots 10, Bears 46

Coach: Raymond Berry

Team Leaders:

Passing: Steve Grogan: 54.5%, seven touchdowns, five interceptions | Tony Eason: 56.2%, 11 touchdowns, 17 interceptions

Rushing: Craig James 263 carries, 1227 yards, five touchdowns | Tony Collins: 163 carries, 657 yards, 3 touchdowns

Receiving: Irving Fryar: 39 receptions, 670 yards, seven touchdowns | Stanley Morgan: 39 receptions, 760 yards, five touchdowns

Defense: Andre Tippett: 16 sacks | Raymond Clayborn: 6 interceptions | Fred Marion: 7 interceptions

Simulation Game: 1985 Patriots vs. 2007 Patriots

2007 Pats: 31 1985 Pats: 17

Steve Grogan (starts): 13/21, 182 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception

Craig James: 19 carries, 73 yards, 1 touchdown

Tony Collins: 10 carries, 36 yards | 3 receptions 25 yards

Irving Fryar: 4 receptions, 57 yards

Stanley Morgan: 3 receptions, 66 yards

Andre Tippett: 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks

Garin Veris: 5 tackles, .5 sacks

Raymond Clayborn: 3 tackles, interception

Fred Marion: 8 tackles

Analysis: The ‘85 Pats defense often uses their quick and effective pass rush to attack Tom Brady, slowing down the passing attack to an extent.  However, the ‘07 team is too much for the ‘85 team, as they come away with a two touchdown win.

One Week Until XLII: Patriots Heading to Arizona Today

January 27, 2008

One week from today, the Patriots will be taking the field against the New York Giants in Superbowl XLII.  Today, however, the team will travel to Arizona, after receiving an official team send off.

Rumor is, Tom Brady will board the plane in a wheel chair.  Obviously, I’m kidding.  One of the things we’ve learned this week is how the media blows everything out of proportion (as if we didn’t know that already).

I have a feeling that Belichick enjoys this.  This entire week, he probably got home, sat on his couch, turned on the t.v., as the nation panicked and frenzied over the cast.  Yes, I know Tom Brady hasn’t been at the media portion of practice for the whole week, but I’m not worried.  He will play.

Look for another update tonight or tomorrow.

Tom Brady in Walking Cast?

January 22, 2008

The AP Report:

NEW YORK (AP) — Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was photographed Monday with what appears to be walking cast on his right foot.

The Boston Herald and Boston Globe had the photos — credited to infphoto.com — on their Web sites. A video of Brady walking with a slight limp from an SUV to girlfriend Gisele Bundchen’s apartment in New York is available on TMZ.com.

The Patriots beat San Diego 21-12 on Sunday and play the New York Giants in the Super Bowl in two weeks.

“Ah, you know, there’s always bumps and bruises. I’ll be ready for the Super Bowl,” Brady said Monday during his weekly radio appearance on WEEI — before the photo and video emerged — when asked if his leg was injured. “I’m not worried about that. I’m not missing this one. I’d have to be on a stretcher to miss this one. There will be treatment this week. In games like this, you get a little nicked up. It’s nothing serious.”

Patriots spokesman Stacey James wrote in an e-mail to the AP late Monday night that the team had no comment on the photos.

Brady threw three interceptions against the Chargers in one of the worst performances of what has been a record-breaking season for him. Brady has started in 124 consecutive games, the third longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history.

This doesn’t sound too bad, but it obviously isn’t good either.  I remember in the second half yesterday, Brady went down hard, and it looked like he injured himself.  I doubt it’s anything serious, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

On To the Superbowl: Patriots Defeat Chargers 21-12 in AFC Championship

January 21, 2008

Unbelievable!  The Patriots are headed back to the Superbowl.

What a season it’s been.  From Spygate to Perfection, nothing from this year will ever be forgotten.

Overall, the Patriots played a really solid game yesterday.  Of course, people are going to read into stories about Tom Brady’s poor performance… but it doesn’t matter, we’re going to Arizona!

Defensively, this was the team’s best performance of the year.  When used, the blitz worked effectively.  In fact, a Mike Vrabel blitz is what caused the Asante Samuel interception.  The run defense was also solid.  For the majority of the game, they held Michael Turner in check.  However, most important, was the Patriots lock-down red zone defense.  Key stat… field goals: 4, touchdowns: zero…

Offensively, Brady struggled.  From the getgo, passes were getting away from him.  The Jammer interception, he let the ball float to long.  The second interception was a bad pass, but Donte could have gotten it.  The Cromartie interception was just a bad read (not like I could do better).  And obviously… Laurence Maroney was fantastic.  Although he didn’t pick up big yards in the first half, he made the most of what he was given.  And when the Patriots started  using 3 tight end sets in the 3rd and 4th quarters, Maroney took full advantage, having yet another good game.

I feel like I’m forgetting someone…  hmm….  I feel like everybody forgets this guy… Oh yeah, Kevin Faulk.  The New Mr. Reliable (sorry Troy).  Every year, every game, he shows up when needed, and he rarely Faulks things up (I’ve always wanted to say that on this site, so there you go).

It’s going to be a fun couple of weeks… stay tuned!

Patriots vs. Chargers: Open Game Thread

January 20, 2008

Finally, the Patriots are back in the AFC Championship game.  One year ago, we saw the team collapse in the second half, as the team blew an early 18 point lead.  But things are different now.The Patriots went out and improved themselves in every facet of the game.  They made pickups defensively (Adalius Thomas and Brandon Meriweather) and even more offensively, (Wes Welker, Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, Kyle Brady).  The team was hyped from the beginning… if Tom Brady led the team to the AFC Championship with Big Eyes as their go-to guy, what could he do with a top end receiving corps? Lead the team to a 16-0 regular season and 50 touchdowns. But the undefeated record no longer means anything.  Right now, the Patriots are back to 0-0.  A loss means a losing season, but a win brings the Patriots their sixth all-time Super Bowl birth. All is on the line.  For some guys, like Tedy Bruschi and Troy Brown, it will be their last chance at another Super Bowl.  Others, like Wes Welker and Laurence Maroney have a long road ahead. All that stands between the Patriots and the Super Bowl is sixty minutes of football.  I can’t wait!Greg’s Prediction: Patriots 34 Chargers 17The score will be a lot closer than it should be.  The Patriots will essentially blow away the Chargers. If Rivers plays, he will struggle, throw 1 td with 3 ints.  LT, should he play, will have some effectiveness, but overall, he will be shut down.  His stats will be something like 20 carries for 77 yards..On the Patriots side of the ball, Randy Moss will explode for a huge game.  My prediction is that he will lay his aggression for this weeks game out on the field. On defense, Mike Vrabel will tear it up.  Why? Because I’m wearing his jersey to the game.GO PATS!

Take Moss Out of the Game, and his Presence is Still Felt

January 16, 2008

This has nothing to do with the battery charges, just a thought about the Jaguars game.

On Saturday, perennial wide receiver Randy Moss caught only one pass in his first playoff game as a New England Patriot.  In fact, the ball was only thrown his way once?  Why? Because the Jaguars double and triple teamed him.  They put one on the line, one back, and a safety over the top.  Just about every play.

Essentially, you could state that the Jags took Randy Moss out of the game.  He couldn’t make any plays.  Yet, Tom Brady still throws 26/28 with three touchdowns.  However, those record breaking stats can be most attributed to Randy Moss.  Because of the attention he garnered on the outside, the middle of the field was opened up for Welker, Faulk, and sometimes Gaffney.

Randy Moss makes the offense that much better, whether or not he is making plays.  If we do lose Randy, whether to suspension for the battery, or to free agency (which I doubt), it will be detrimental to our offense.

Woman Accuses Randy Moss of Battery

January 16, 2008

I’m not sure what to think. I want to believe Randy Moss, but you never know with these things. I just pray that Moss is telling the truth, and that he can get out of this thing ok. Otherwise, his legacy will be completely tarnished. If you missed it, here’s the AP Report:

A temporary restraining order was issued Monday requiring the star wide receiver to stay at least 500 feet from a woman who alleged he committed “battery causing serious injury” to her at her Florida home on Jan. 6.

Moss denied the allegation by Rachelle Washington, which he called “this situation of extortion,” and said he was “furious” about it. The restraining order was issued in the Broward County 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida.

A hearing on whether to issue a permanent restraining order is scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 28, six days before the Super Bowl.

Moss broke his usual midweek silence as he was surrounded by two dozen reporters and 10 videocameras at his locker on Wednesday. He didn’t identify the woman but said she has been a friend for 11 years and that she asked for “six figures” for what he said was an accident in which she was hurt.

“I want to make something clear,” Moss said. “In my whole entire life of living 30 years, I’ve never put my hand on one woman, physically or in an angry manner.”

David McGill, the attorney for Washington, had no comment, according to his legal assistant, Melissa Miller. A telephone message left by The Associated Press with Moss’ attorney, Jim DiPiero, was not immediately returned.

In his previous nine seasons — seven with Minnesota and two with Oakland — Moss was involved in several off-field incidents.

“This is a negative,” he said of the latest allegation, “a black cloud hanging over my head, and that’s something that I did not want coming into the season. … Everything I tried to do from getting here early, to make sure I eat the right food, all the way to practicing and playing, I wanted all of that to be A-plus.

“Everything’s been positive, so why would I bring something negative on. As much as I care and love the game of football and love my teammates, I would never put myself or them in a situation of something like this.”

With the Vikings, he was criticized by quarterback Daunte Culpepper and others for leaving the field with 2 seconds left in a regular-season loss to Washington. He bumped a female traffic control officer with his car in 2002, verbally abused corporate sponsors on a team bus in 2001 and squirted an official with a water bottle in 1999.

On draft day last April, the Patriots sent a 2007 fourth-round draft choice to Oakland for Moss, who has avoided off-field problems this season and been hailed by Patriots players as an excellent teammate and leader.

Undefeated New England plays the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship Game in Foxborough on Sunday, thanks in part to Moss, a unanimous choice to the All-Pro team. During the season he caught 98 passes for 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns, breaking Jerry Rice’s single-season mark of 22 in the season finale against the Giants. Moss had one catch in Saturday night’s 31-20 playoff win over Jacksonville, which resorted to double and triple coverage on him.

Washington alleged Moss refused to allow her to seek medical treatment.

“She has her own house. She has her own car,” Moss said. “So how am I going to deny someone medical attention when you live by yourself and have your own vehicle?”

He said the allegation will not distract him in Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

“Last Friday, this man wanted to come out with it,” Moss said, apparently referring to someone siding with Washington, “just to try to distract the team and distract me.

“There was much more said, a lot of verbal, a lot of cuss words, a lot of things that I should be doing. You better do this or else. … Well, I thought it was bad because now you’re threatening me, so I brought it to coach.”

Moss said Patriots coach Bill Belichick told him to focus on football.

“They’re false allegations, something I’ve been battling for like the last couple of days of threats going public if I didn’t pay ‘X’ amount of dollars,” Moss said. “So before people rush quick to judgment, I think you need to find out the facts about, really, what’s going on.

“This young lady by no means is hurt. I didn’t hurt her.”

Moss said athletes are targets for false allegations.

“It’s very unfair to athletes if a person makes a false claim. You know, there’s nothing that we can do,” Moss said. “The only thing that we can do is either pay up or sit back and listen to what’s being said or what’s being written.

“For someone to make a false claim about me, I’m kind of furious. It kind of hurts me deep inside for someone to do something like that because, you know, I’ve always said time and time again, I’m going to stand up for what’s right. If I’m right, I’m right. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong.”

Moss faced misdemeanor charges after a 1996 fight with the mother of his daughter, but they were dropped after both agreed to counseling.

He was asked if he thought people would believe his current denial.

“I think the best thing is to check my resume, ask around,” Moss said. “I’ve never hit a woman. I do not hit women.”

Patriots vs. Jaguars: Open Game Thread

January 12, 2008

Tonight, the Jacksonville Jaguars head to Foxborough to take on the undefeated New England Patriots.  The Jags barely outlasted Pittsburgh last week, despite holding the lead for most of the game.

The Patriots are 12-2 in the playoffs under Bill Belichick, and look to move to 13-2, which would advance them to the AFC championship against the Chargers or the Colts.

I haven’t exactly been writing this off, but I haven’t been worried that the season is going to come to a close.  However, it could.  The Jaguars are on a roll, and a few breaks for them, and there’s a chance they could come out on top.  The scary thing is, our offseason could begin tomorrow.

For the Jaguars, John Henderson is probable, and should play.  If the Jags get a good push up front, the could give Brady some problems.  Don’t be surprised if Maroney gets around 20 carries tonight, just trying to keep the Jaguars honest.

The other problem looks to be the Jaguars running game.  Everybody knows they have the big 3 (Taylor, Jones, and Jones-Drew), and everyone knows the Patriots defense is aging.  However, I think the Patriots are going to come out and stuff the run.  Fred Taylor will have about 30 yards on 10 carries, and Jones-Drew about 28 yards on 9 carries (which will include about a 15 yard run).  Garrard will break down a little, throwing 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

The Jags may take an early lead, but the Patriots will take it back and stretch it to 2-3 scores.  The Jags might get a late touchdown, but it will be too little to late.

Greg’s Prediction: Patriots 34 Jaguars 24
